TEE IT UP Tuesday
October 20, 2026Stop Wasting Your Practice Swing: Improve Your Ball Striking
Almost every golfer takes a practice swing before hitting a shot, but how many actually have a purpose behind it?
In the November 3 edition of Tee It Up Tuesday, I explain how a simple change to your pre-shot routine can lead to more consistent contact, better distance control, and more greens in regulation.
When the golf ball is on the ground, controlling where the bottom of your swing occurs is essential. Ideally, the club should strike the ball first and then interact with the turf. Your practice swing provides valuable feedback about where your club is bottoming out before you step in to hit the shot.
If your practice swing hits the ground several inches behind where the ball would be—or misses the ground entirely—don’t ignore that information. Make another practice swing, recalibrate your low point, and then step in with the same rhythm and intention.
The goal isn’t simply to take a practice swing. It’s to make every practice swing count.
