September 8, 2026First-Tee Nerves? Turn Them Into Your Best Golf
First-tee nerves happen to golfers at every level. The problem isn’t necessarily feeling nervous—it’s what you tell yourself when those nerves show up.
“Don’t hit it in the water.” “Don’t hit it out of bounds.” “Don’t embarrass yourself.”
Before hitting a shot, many golfers are already focusing on everything that could go wrong. Learning to redirect those thoughts and use nervous energy in a positive way can make a big difference when playing under pressure.
In this week’s Tee It Up Tuesday, I share a personal story from PGA Tour qualifying and explain the mental approach that changed how I dealt with first-tee nerves throughout my competitive career. Instead of trying to eliminate the butterflies, golfers can learn to embrace that energy, focus on the shot they want to hit, and build themselves up rather than tear themselves down.
This edition also highlights several opportunities to improve your game at Durland Golf School this fall, including limited availability in upcoming three-day golf schools, new clinics and short game programs, and remote coaching through CoachNow.
Also featured is Drive & Spec, a new two-hour driver instruction and fitting experience limited to six golfers. The session combines TrackMan instruction with Mark Durland and GCQuad club fitting with True Spec Golf’s Matt Markle.
