July 28, 2026Practice Smarter: How to Get More From Your Short Game Practice
Spending more time practicing doesn’t always lead to better golf. How you practice can be just as important as how long you practice.
In this week’s Tee It Up Tuesday, I focus on how golfers can make their short game practice more productive by understanding the difference between block practice and random practice.
Block practice involves repeating the same shot from the same location, which can be useful when you’re learning or refining a technique. Random practice challenges you to change targets, distances, lies, or clubs from shot to shot—making your practice more closely resemble what you experience on the golf course.
Both have a place in an effective practice routine.
In this week’s instructional video, I share a simple short game practice routine and demonstrate how using a tee can provide immediate feedback on your contact. With the right structure and feedback, 20 minutes of focused practice can often be more productive than an hour spent hitting shots without a clear purpose.
This edition also features a True Spec Golf Retro Rebuild of the iconic Nike SasQuatch Sumo 2 3-wood. After collecting baseline performance data, the club is rebuilt with a modern Fujikura VENTUS TR Blue shaft and tested again to see how today’s fitting and club-building technology can influence the performance of a golf classic.
